Lighten Your Load: Ten Strategies for Managing Stress an Embracing Fun

It’s hard to even remember what life was like when you didn’t have to meet an endless flood of demands.  You’re never really off.  You barely have any free time, and when you do, it feels like it’s already filled with “to do’s”, “should have done’s”, and “ugh, I have to’s”.

Stress is an inevitable companion for many high achievers. Your ambitions, goals and responsibilities don’t leave much room for fun or relaxation. But, why not achieve and also have a joyful life? There are ways you can manage stress and create space for laughter and fun.

Practical Strategies for Stress Management

  1. Mindfulness and Meditation: You’ve heard it before, and that’s because the data proves that taking even a few minutes each day to pause, breathe, and center yourself can significantly reduce stress levels. Mindfulness is paying attention on purpose. Notice the breeze outside your window.  Feel the water on your hands as you wash them.  Now, add three deep breaths and you’re there!  This may sound simple, but the effects over time are profound.

  2. Set Boundaries: Easier said than done, but vitally important to the process. Say no to activities or commitments that drain your energy without adding value to your life.  Create spaces in your life where you are completely free from the need or expectation to be reachable.  Let yourself have some time away from notifications, e-mails, and demands. It’s ok that it feels impossible or uncomfortable at first - it’s worth it!

  3. Movement: Move your body to give the tension somewhere to go.  This is not all or nothing, you don’t have to train to run a marathon, just look to give your body the opportunity to move in ways that feel good.  After you finish the stressful meeting, set your timer for 2 minutes and gently stretch your shoulders and neck. Make a commitment to engage in regular exercise or physical activities that you enjoy. Exercise not only improves physical health but also releases endorphins that boost mood and reduce stress.

  4. Time Management: You’ve heard it before, but most things are just easier to take care of yourself, the right way, the first time, right?  OK - but your time is precious, and you aren’t satisfied with the way it’s being used now, so where are there places you can make changes and carve out time for YOU? Delegate, prioritize and break down tasks to manageable steps.

  5. Seek Support: This is your life, and you won’t get the time back.  Talking to someone about it will help you get the support and perspective you need to make changes for the better.  Reach out to friends, family, or a professional therapist for support. I help high achievers find the fun in life again. If you’re ready, let’s talk to see if we are a good fit to work together.

  6. Put Fun on the Calendar: Make a list of activities that bring you joy, whether it's hiking, painting, dancing, or trying out new restaurants. Make it a non-negotiable that you are prioritizing these activities for yourself.

  7. Make a Mess: Make mistakes, create without judgment, be willing to fall down and try again just for the fun of it. Try something new with no expectations of being good or being productive.

  8. Get Connected:  Find people that feel good to be around and connect with them.  Spend quality time with friends and family members who make you laugh and feel relaxed. Research shows that one of the most important components of a joyful life are the connections we make, big and small.

  9. Recreate your Joy: You’re never too old to have fun and look at the world with awe.  Did you like to ride your bike and explore as a kid?  Get back out there and go for a spin.  Rediscover old hobbies or explore new interests. Do things for the purpose of fun and recreation, let practicality take a break.

  10. Laugh Often: There’s truth to the cliche that laughter is the best medicine.  Purposefully put yourself in funny situations.  Watch a comedy show, listen to a funny podcast, or share jokes with friends to lighten the mood. Go into your day with the intent of laughing and encourage yourself to let go and let it out.  Be confident and willing to laugh at yourself.

Managing stress and embracing playfulness are essential components of a balanced and fulfilling life. Prioritizing your mental health is not only beneficial for you but also enhances your ability to thrive in all areas.  Start today by implementing one small change, and gradually build on your progress. Your journey to a lighter, more joyful life begins with a single step.
